North Florida PGA 2019 Section Award Winner: Teacher of the Year 

Recognized by GOLF Magazine as one of the Top 100 Teachers in America, Fred Griffin is responsible for the development of all golf instructional programs at the Grand Cypress Academy of Golf. A PGA Class A professional with over 40 years of teaching experience, Griffin has served as the Director of the Academy since it opened in 1986 as the Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf. A superb teacher, Fred was honored as one of a select few as a Lead Coach for the Golf Channel Academy and was recognized as Teacher of the Year for the North Florida section of the PGA. Along with Dr. Ralph Mann, he is co-author of the golf instructional book Swing Like a Pro and created an entire curriculum based on their scientific research on the swing and short game.  He is a frequent contributor for several golf publications and has presented at several PGA educational programs, Griffin coaches’ golfers of all ability levels including, PGA, LPGA Tour and top amateur players.

Gus was named one of the "Best Teachers" in the state of Florida for 2003-2015 by Golf Digest, and has been a member of the Academy’s instructional staff for 30 years.  An All-American Collegiate golfer at the University of Georgia, Gus placed 3rd in the 1977 NCAA Golf Championship.  He was also named to the United States All-Star Collegiate golf team that included John Cook, Scott Hoch, and Chip Beck.  Gus continues to play competitively in PGA sectional, statewide, and national tournaments.  Gus has worked with players of all ability levels from beginners to tour players and many juniors aspiring to be collegiate players.

Todd was named one of the "Best Teachers" in the state of Florida by Golf Digest for the last ten years consecutively and has been a member of the Academy's instructional staff for 22 years. As a former European PGA tour member, Todd has an extensive playing background. He has been the featured instructor on The Golf Academy Live Show, and has led numerous instructional workshops for the PGA of America. Fundamental to Todd’s teaching is the understanding of the proper release of the club and the importance of getting to the finish of the swing with a consistent rhythm. Todd is originally from California and has lived in Orlando since 1987.  Todd has been named Villas of Grand Cypress Employee of the Year (2011) and was named ‘Best of the Best’ by Benchmark Hospitality in 2012.”

Harry was recently named one of the Top 50 Instructors in the state of Florida for 2015-2018 by Golf Digest. Harry has been a member of the Academy’s instructional staff for 31 years. He was named “Teacher of the Year" for the East Central Chapter of the North Florida PGA in 2000. Harry has worked with several PGA and LPGA players.

Doug is originally from Hays, KS where he excelled in golf. He became involved with the game at an early age as his parents operated the Ft. Hays Municipal Golf Course Pro Shop while he was in elementary school. He was the Kansas State Junior Champion and played golf collegiately at Ft. Hays State University where his father was the Head Coach. Doug turned Professional in 1987 and moved to Florida. He began working at The Grand Cypress Academy of Golf in 1988 and was a Head Instructor from 1990 to 1995. He worked as a Golf Instructor from 1996 to 2001 in Wichita, KS., Las Vegas, NV. and Memphis, TN. before returning to Florida in 2002. Doug returned to Grand Cypress in 1993 to work again as an instructor. He has been a Class A member of the PGA since 1995 and still competes in local and regional PGA Club Professional tournaments. Doug is head instructor of the Academy Junior Golf program and was nominated for the East Central Chapter PGA Teacher of the Year as well as PGA Chapter Junior Golf Teacher of the Year. 

 Barb Mucha, LPGA Touring Professional and Instructor

Originally from Parma Heights, Ohio, Barb competed on the LPGA Tour for over 20 years with 5 tournament wins to her credit. Along with teaching at The Grand Cypress Golf Academy, she currently competes on the Legends Tour. Barb was named the 1996 Golf Digest Most Improved Player and inducted into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.Throughout her career, Barb has been associated with Grand Cypress for over 25 years. She enjoys teaching all levels of players, focusing on both the physical and mental game. She is currently working with several aspiring mini-tour, collegiate, and junior golfers to assist them in reaching their goal of becoming a LPGA or PGA touring professional.

 Dr. Ryan J. Caserta, Resident Golf Psychologist

A nationally and internationally recognized sport psychologist, Dr. Ryan Caserta is an expert in how the eyes and visual perception affects golf performance, mental expertise, and success on the golf course. Dr. Caserta’s scientifically based Individualized Multidimensional Perceptual and Cognitive Training (IMPACT) program has produced winners on every major tour in the world, including multiple wins on the PGA Tour, European PGA Tour, LPGA Tour (client Na Yeon Choi finishing 2010 #1 on the LPGA Money List), Nationwide Tour, amateur level (client Byeong Hun-An won the United States Amateur Championship-youngest champion in history), collegiate level, and junior tours. His research has been published in the most prestigious journals in the field of sport psychology, and he has been invited to present his research and training to some of the largest sports organizations throughout the world.
